LAD/Blog #27: MLK, Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech

King opens his speech by stating that 5 score ago the emancipation proclamation was signed. This us used to do two things: allude to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address as well as demonstrate the amount of time it has been since then. Despite the time, King notes that African Americans are still bound to discrimination from their white counterparts. King says that the peaceful protests performed by African Americans that have shook America will not cease until African Americans are presented with the rights they are afforded under the Constitution. King says he aims for unrestricted voting privileges and social mobility for all races. Some of King's dreams within his speech are: no judgement on the color of one's skin, instead on their character  former slaveholders and former slaves will get along and feel like brothers.  uphold the memento of "all men are created equal"  " little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white

LAD/Blog #30: Woodrow Wilson's First Inaugural

Wilson begins his address by citing that they have a unified government with the legislative and executive branches all having control by democrats, which demonstrates the changing views of the people and their altered perspectives. Wilson continues by stating what he sees as the new views of the people, which in conjunction with a government that is able to enact change, and also combat big business once and for all. He says that he aims to end the negative externalities associated with the massive economic boom of the 20th century and make a better environment and more income equality. Wilson asks for the support of the people so he may succeed and help them to end the address. Wilson JFK also was elected with a unified government.

LAD/Blog #29: Clayton Anti-Trust Act

The Clayton Antitrust Act was passed to complement and solve issues that were not addressed in the Sherman Antitrust act. Clayton focused on more so on price fixing and manipulation and other unethical business practices. Created by Henry Clayton of Alabama, it was used to prevent the aforementioned measures that lead to trust-like behaviors. The act determined that price changes could be only used due to changes in quality of a good. The act deemed boycotts, unions, and strikes as legal. This act was more specific and proactive than Sherman, making it a good complement. Henry Clayton The small business act of 1953 ensured that the government would also encourage competition.

LAD/Blog #28: Keating-Owen Child Labor Act

The Keating-Owen Child Labor Act, a law passed to protect labor rights. This act prohibited any manufacturer from participating in commerce until they had 30 days of production without the use of children (under 16), children 14-16 working 8+ hours/ week, and any child under the age of 14 working at all. The act also enables inspectors to go into manufacturing plants to seek out firms that disobey this act. The consequences related to disobeying these actions are fines and jail time. The final clause of this law states that it will become in effect 1 year after its passing. While this law lasted for a short amount of time after being struck down via judicial review due to the overstepping of the federal government in regulating commerce, it set an important precedent. outcry to lessen child labor OSHA currently does the job that the Keating-owen act tried to do.
